Death Claims H. D. Middleton
Funeral services conducted by Rev. R. C. Foster, for Herbert David[*] Middleton, were held Wednesday afternoon at five o'clock, at the home, on Pine street. Mr. Middleton was 60 years old last December. He suffered a stroke of paralysis about two years ago and had been in ill health since, and for the past two weeks he had been seriously ill. He was born and reared three miles southeast of Warsaw, and had made his home at the old Middleton home until six years ago, when the family moved to Warsaw. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David John Middleton and was from one of Duplin's oldest and most prominent families.
Mr. Middleton was a member of Johnson's Baptist Church, and was always very active in his church and community work.
He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mattie Henderson, of Onslow county, his second wife was Miss Lila Gillespie, of near Warsaw.
Interment was made in the family burial ground at the old house. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lila Gillispie Middleton, and five children, Mrs. W. M. Hawkins, of Richmond, Va, Mrs. Ernest Thornton, of Meban, Henry Middleton, of Raleigh, Herbert D. Jr., of Charlotte, and Leila May Middleton, of Warsaw, and one brother, Theo. Middleton of Magnolia.
The pall bearers were: L. H. Brown, George Bennett, H. H. Carleton, William Boyette, A. D. Hall, D. W. Hobbs, Faison W. McGowan, and E. L. Wheless.
