This genealogical website consists of several organizationally separate sections. The various sections are listed in the the left column on the "Welcome!" page entitled "The John Middleton Family". Each section can be reached by clicking on the appropriate name text in the left column. The two largest sections are "Descendants of John Middleton" and "Middleton Cemeteries in Duplin Cty, NC".
The "Decendants of John Middleton" section is made up of family group sheets, starting with John Middleton of Onslow County, NC (d. 1744). You get to his Family Group Sheet (FGS) by:
1.
First, clicking on
"Descendants of John Middleton (d. 1744)" in the left column.
The introduction page titled "Descendants of John Middleton of Onslow
County, NC will appear.
2.
Next, click either on a) "Click to Start Here" just below the map
graphic or on "His Family" in the navigation bar just below the first
straight line. Either click will carry you to John Middleton's FGS.
All descendant family group sheets are organized using hyperlinks. Text
that appears blue/purple and underlined represents a hyperlink to somewhere;
where depends upon the context. For example, a hyperlinked child's name
will bring up that child's own FGS with him/her as husband or wife. Some
descendancy lines have up to 6-7 generations of Family Group
Sheets.
The "Middleton Cemeteries in Duplin Cty, NC" section brings together all cemetery and gravestone information and pictures in one organizational area. On the home page, if you click on "Middleton Cemeteries in Duplin Cty, NC" in the left column, you will go to the table of contents for cemetery information. The individual items in the list are self-explanatory. Clicking on the name of one of the cemeteries will bring up that cemetery page containing information about the cemetery and a listing of the names of all individuals known to be buried there. If the name is hyperlinked, clicking on the name will carry you to a picture of that individual's gravestone. Clicking on the hyperlinked name beneath the gravestone picture will bring up the FGS for that person. Also, from a FGS, one can view an individual's gravestone (if it is on the website) by clicking on "Additional Information" on the FGS and then clicking on the individual's name under "Gravestones".
Navigating through the Family Group Sheets One Generation
at a Time:
With any Family Group Sheet (FGS) on-screen, you can go back in time one generation to the
FGS for the husband's or wife's parents by clicking on the hyperlinked "His
Parents" or "Her Parents" button in the
navigation bar. Or,
you can go forward in time one generation to the FGS of a child as husband/wife,
by clicking on the hyperlinked name of the child. So, in
summary, you can move backward or forward in time one generation from any FGS by
clicking on a hyperlinked "His Parents"/"Her
Parents" button or on a hyperlinked child's name,
respectively.
The basic layout is illustrated in Figure 1 below. For example, if you click on "Child A" in John Middleton's FGS (1st generation), you will be carried to the FGS for "Child A" (2nd generation). While looking at the Family Group Sheet for "Child A", you can:
1) Go back to John
Middleton's FGS by clicking on the "His Parents" or the "Her
Parents" button in the navigation bar (depending on whether Child A is male or female),
or
2) Go to Child 1A's FGS (3rd
generation) by clicking on "Child
1A".
Thus, Child A (as well as Child B, Child B1 and Child B2) will be listed both in his/her parents' FGS and in his/her own FGS as husband or wife. Child C and Child A2 in this illustration (names are not hyperlinks) do not have their own FGS; they are found only on their parents' FGS. If a child's name is not hyplinked to his/her own FGS, it means:
1) The person never married
or
2) Information is not known
about his/her family (spouse and children) or
3) The person was born
after about 1910-1920. Individuals born after 1910-1920 are not included
on this website.

Moving Directly to a Specific Individual, Picture, or
Allied Family Name:
You can go directly to a particular individual by using the "Name
Index" button found on each Family Group Sheet (FGS). Just click on
the button, select the first letter of the surname, scroll down the list of
names that appear to find the individual, and click on the name. If the
individual has a FGS in which the individual is either the husband or the wife, that
FGS will appear. If the individual does not have a of their own, the FGS for the individual's parents
will appear; the individual will be listed as a child. The "Picture
Index" and the "Allied Families" buttons work in a similar
manner.
Other Pearls:
1. Special Information such as court records, wills, obituaries, cemeteries, gravestones, pictures, etc. -- if on the website -- are accessed from the family group sheets by clicking on "Additional Information" just below the navigation bar near the top of the sheet and then clicking on the information/document desired on the page that appears next. The "Additional Information" for a particular individual is accessed on the family group sheet in which that individual is listed as husband or wife. If the individual has never married, he/she does not have their own FGS, and "Additional Information" is accessed from his/her parents' family group sheet.
2. The website may be viewed in either "Full Screen" or "Use Frames" mode. The default setting is "Full Screen" in which the file being viewed fills the entire screen. By clicking on the "Use Frames" button on the screen titled "Descendants of John Middleton of Onslow County, NC" (first screen encountered after clicking on "Descendants of John Middleton" on the home page). Use the "Full Screen" view if you want a larger-size type on the screen. Use "Frames" particularly if you are searching names, pictures, etc. on the site; the index keypads and lists that are always present in the left frame will make searches faster and easier.
