The James Middleton (Capt., Sr.) cemetery is located in Duplin County on the south side of Grove Swamp on a farm near the back of a cultivated field behind the house located at 1420 Highway 24/50, Warsaw, NC   28398.  Highway 24/50 is the main route from Warsaw to Kenansville; the cemetery is on the left side of the road as one heads toward Kenansville.  The property was once a part of Captain James Middleton's land and continued in the Middleton family for some time.  The farm on which it is located is now owned by others.  The cemetery can be seen from the highway when crops are not present or when they are young.  Access is via a driveway that goes between the house and barn and continues as a path through the field and on to the cemetery.  It is accessible by car, but permission should be obtained from the owners of the farm before driving (or walking) to the site.

The cemetery in 2009 is well maintained, is surrounded by a white fence, and measures 54 feet by 82 feet (4428 square feet).  Having undergone extensive renovation in recent years, it contains, in addition to numerous gravesites and markers, a  concrete table with three benches along with four long benches and various recent plantings.  The concrete table and benches give those who visit a place to rest while visiting.  The plantings include two Nellie Stevens hollies, one China Boy holly for pollination, a silver maple, a smoke tree, and dwarf hollies.

James Middleton, a captain in the Revolutionary War, was buried there along with his wife Mary Nixon, his unmarried son James, his son David and his son's two wives (Cyrene McClammy & Celia Gregory) and James Spicer (his daughter Kitty's husband; she remarried after his death and moved to Memphis TN).  The 12-foot by 12-foot portion of the cemetery was concreted over in the 1960's;  the concrete is now covered with soil, but the area is identified by a marker. Other Middletons, as well as members of allied families, were also buried in the cemetery during the 1800's and early 1900's.
