ALLIED FAMILIES:

On the "Allied Families" page are listed surnames related to this Middleton family by marriage. If the surname is hyperlinked, clicking on the name will take you to that surname in the name index. Listed will be all individuals with that surname in the family group pages. Allied Families can be accessed either by the navigation bar on the Home Page and other pages or by the table in the left frame when in frame presentation

FRAMES:

If your browser is capable of displaying frames, the "Use Frames" option on the Home Page can be selected to view the information in a frames format. There will be three frames at all times. A banner across the top, a medium-sized contents frame on the left side below the banner, and a larger main frame on the right side below the banner. You can switch back to full screen at any time by selecting the "Full Screen" navigation button in the banner frame.

1. The banner frame always contains navigation buttons. Since there are too many buttons to fit in one row across a VGA screen, the buttons are divided into two groups. The more important functions are included in the navigation bar that appears when frames are first loaded. The navigation buttons not included in the default group are accessed by selecting the "Other Options" button. When the second set of buttons are on-screen, you can return to the first, default group simply by again selecting "Other Options". Some navigation buttons in the banner frame affect the contents of the left lower contents frame; others affect the contents of the right lower main frame.

2. The contents frame contains further navigation tools. A "keypad" appears by default when frames are first loaded. You can go to the name index listing of any first letter of surnames simply by clicking on that letter in the keypad. The contents of this frame will remain the same until you select a navigation button that loads something else into the contents frame. Selections made in the contents frame affect the main frame only. Navigation buttons in the banner frame that affect the contents frame are "Allied Families," "Help," "Name Index," and "Picture Index".

3. The main frame contains all the genealogical information. As you will note, the pages that appear here are the same ones that appear while viewing in full-screen format. Therefore, there are navigation buttons in both the banner frame and the main frame. Some of the navigation functions are present in both places (e.g., "Allied Families", "Help", "Name Index", etc.). The navigation buttons in the main frame, however, only affect what is seen in the main frame. Therefore, when the same function is present in both places, the banner navigation button should be used, since the banner navigation bar is always in view (no need to scroll to get back to the buttons) and since some of the banner navigation buttons load further navigation tools into the contents frame which make moving among the various pages faster and more efficient. Some navigation functions, however, are present only in the main frame (e.g., "His Parents", "Her Parents", "Additional Information", etc.).

INTRODUCTION:

This Web Site concerns the genealogy of John Middleton, who died in Onslow County, NC in 1774. He represents the first ancestor in the Middleton lineage that has been identified. His descendants are organized into essentially family group sheets, with one family per page. Two editorial principles are maintained throughout: 1)The emphasis is primarily on the direct descendants of John Middleton and less on the ancestry of spouses; and 2) the descendancy information stops at about 1900. These two principles were necessary to keep the project at a manageable size, at least for the intermediate future. When the site construction first began, the inclusion of known families was incomplete in an effort to make at least some information about the family available on the Web as soon as possible. With time more families will be added as the pages are constructed. When the known families are completed, a decision will be made about whether or not to modify the two principles noted above.

MOVING ABOUT:

Exploring this grouping of web pages is facilitated by having an understanding of the underlying organization (see "Organization"). In brief, the core organization is that of a descendancy chart made up of family group pages (sheets) with John Middleton of Onslow county's family group sheet in the "root directory". From there family group pages move out and forward in time, one generation at a time.

For each family group page, the page is connected to the previous generation by the "His Parents" and "Her Parents" hyperlinks ("his" and "her" being the husband and wife parents in the family group). In turn, each group page is linked to the next generation through hyperlinks associated with the names of the children. If a child's name is in regular black text rather than hyperlink text, there is no information about the next generation in that particular line. With these forward and backward hyperlinks, one can move up and down the descendancy chart one generation at a time.

If there is other available information about an individual or family over and above that found on a standard family group page, the navigation bar on the individual's or family's family group page will contain a button called "Additional Information". The additional information might consist of pictures, deeds, wills, research papers, etc. Access the information by selecting the "Additional Information" button. If there is a picture available for a particular individual, there will be a "[Picture (_K)]" hyperlink at the end of the information about thr individual in the family group page. A navigation button to the Family Group Page is present at the bottom of each picture page. To go back to the previous page, you can simply click on the "Back" button on your browser.

In the root directory are several navigation functions that apply to the entire collection of pages and facilitate movement among the pages by offering alternative methods over and above the generation-to-generation approach. Examples include "Allied Families", "Name Index", "Picture Index", and "Search". Selecting one of these functions will bring up a surname list, a alphabetized listing of individuals, an alphabetized listing of pictures and a search form, respectively. Selecting a surname from the "Allied Families" list will take you directly to that surname in the name index. Selecting an individual in the name index will take you directly to that individual's family group page. Making a selection in the Picture Index will take you directly to that picture. Entering and searching a word in the search form will give a listing of all incidences of that word in the home page site with hyperlinks to the appropriate pages.

NAME INDEX:

The Name Index contains all individuals included in this Web site, listed alphabetically with name and date of birth (if a marriage or death date is used instead, it is so designated). If there is a Family Group Sheet (FGS) in which the individual is listed as a parent, selecting that individual in the index will carry you to his/her FGS. If there is no FGS in which the individual is listed as a parent, selection of that individual in the Name Index will carry you to his/her parents' FGS.

Spouses of direct descendants are indicated in the list with "(sp.)" following the date in parentheses. Family members of spouses (parents, siblings, sibling's descendants, nieces) are designated by "(alld. fam.)" following the date in parentheses. All individuals without a "(sp.)" or "(alld. fam)" are direct descendants of John Middleton of Onslow Cty, NC.

ORGANIZATION:

This pages/functions on this web site can be divided into four types: 1) Group sheets, 2) search/ navigation tools, 3) viewer assistance, and 4) miscellaneous.

The primary structure of the web site is that of a descendancy chart with each page in the chart representing a family group, starting with John Middleton of Onslow County, NC (d. 1744) (accessed by selecting "His Family" on the Home Page navigation bar).. Each family group page has hyperlinks back to the parents of the husband and/or wife (navigation bar below title) and forward (in time) to the family group sheets of the children (name hyperlinked to the child's family group with the child as parent). The descendancy does not include individuals born after about 1910. If a child's name in a family group consists of regular text rather than a hyperlink, there is no information available on that individual's descendants.

To facilitate navigation of the web site and to make the finding of desired information easier, the site includes several tools that give alternative ways of getting to a desired place in the web site. These tools include Name Index, Picture Index, Allied Families and Search. Each of these tools takes one directly to the indicated name, picture, surname and text word.

Navigation 1) by moving one generation at the time with family group hyperlinks to the previous and the next generation and 2) by utilizing one of the tools listed in the previous paragraph can be combined, switching back and forth between the two methods. In general, if what you want is in the next generation from the group sheet that you are in, then the group sheet navigation probably will work better. On the other hand, if what you want is several generations away, the use of an index or the like will probably be more satisfactory.

If more information is available on a family other than family group data (name, dates and places of birth, marriage and death for the spouses and each child), there will be a navigation button on the group sheet titled "Additional Information" which lies just below the navigation bar which in turn lies just below the page title. This button is hyperlinked to a summary page of additional information, which may include pictures of people, places and things; wills; deeds; court records; military records; research summaries, etc. Each item on the "Additional Information" page is in turn hyperlinked to the designated picture or record. "Additional Information" pages and the pages of pictures and documents to which they hyperlink have limited navigation options, generally requiring that you return to the family group page from which they branch.

The web site can be viewed either "full-screen" on in "frames". While in frames format, "full-screen" is always available on the navigation bar in the banner at the top of the screen. While viewing "full-screen", the "frames" option is available only on some pages; but one can always go back to Home Page and select "frames" from there.

Other functions/pages on the web site of attended as viewer assistance. They include "Links", "Help" and "What's New". Miscellaneous items include "Reunion" and "Register".

PICTURE INDEX:

The Picture Index lists alphabetically in separate groupings the names of all families, people, places, and things for whom or for which there is a picture included in the web site. After the name is the date of birth, if known. If the individual is a spouse, there is a "(sp.)" following the date. Last on the line is the size of the file. Clicking on the name of the person, place or picture will carry you to the associated picture. The picture pages have only one navigation button: "Family Group Page" which carries you to that individual's family group page. To return to the Picture Index instead, click on the "Back" button in the web browser.

QUERIES:

The Queries page contains questions concerning this Middleton family. At the present time, the page is not interactive, and questions must be entered by the site operator. Links for e-mail addresses are included for ease of responding to the queries. If you have a query that you would like entered, sent an e-mail request to the web site operator. The e-mail hyperlink for the site operator can be found at the bottom of the home page.

| Return to Help Index | Queries |

REGISTER:The Register section is located on the "Reunion" page and is a registration form in which one can submit to the site operator their name, address, and relationship to any member of the family. All individuals submitting information will be included on the family mailing list for announcements concerning the reunion and any other general correspondence.

Note: This function of the Web Site is presently not operational. When this "Note" disappears from this location, the function will be operational.

| Return to Help Index | Register |

SEARCH:

The "Search" page is a form that permits one the search the text of the web site for a specific work. This is particularly helpful in searching for places and the like. It is not very effective in searching for names, for whatever reason. Names are better searched using the Name Index. After you have requested the search and the page reloads, scroll down below the search form. Listed will be the pages in the site on which the word in question appears. To go to that site, simply click on the hyperlinked name in the list below the form.

Note: This function of the Web Site is presently not operational. When this "Note" disappears from this location, the function will be operational.

VIEWING FORMAT:

If your Web browser is capable of displaying frames, you may view this home page either in a full-screen format or in a frames format. If your browser is not capable of displaying frames, chose full-screen only. If you have a choice, in general:

1. With the "Frames" format, navigation within the web site is more efficient. However, if you are using a lower resolution monitor (vga, 640x480), more scrolling will be required compared to full-screen to view a page. "Frames" will be preferable if you want primarily to search the web site, rapidly moving from page to page.

2. With "Full-Screen" format, more of the page will be on the screen at any one time with a lower resolution monitor, but more scrolling will probably be required compared to frames to return to navigate about the web site using the navigation buttons. "Full-Screen" will be preferable if you want to study a family group page or a document in detail.

WHAT'S NEW:

The "What's New" page lists in reverse chronological order the changes that have been made in the Middleton web site. Included are additions and significant organizational and formatting changes. Minor tweaks and adjustments and operational changes that are not apparent to the viewer are not included. As one scrolls down the page, the most recent changes are seen first.
