John Middleton first appeared as an adult and lived in ELIZABETH CITY County (Hampton) VA in the 1710's and 1720's. He migrated to CARTERET County (later ONSLOW County) NC in the early 1730's.  He may have spent several intervening years in coastal northeastern North Carolina (probably Chowan Co.).

He died in Onslow County, NC in 1744, leaving a valid will dated April 1744 in which he named his wife Sarah and eight children and alluded to a previous wife, the mother of his eldest son. His descendants settled primarily in DUPLIN, NEW HANOVER, ONSLOW and PENDER counties of North Carolina.  Branches of the family migrated to BARNWELL County SC (about 1800), LOWNDES County AL (about 1838), WEAKLEY County TN (about 1825), SHARP (formerly LAWRENCE) County, AR (about 1850) and elsewhere.
